Zany Ideas for Lagging Afternoon

Of course, games are enjoyed because of the companionship and interest they stimulate...and we don't always need a reward. But sometimes prizes fit the situation and generate encouragement and enthusiasm.

So, keep a stash of little prizes on hand. It's really easy and cheap. When shopping, just pick up inexpensive items that are on sale or check out a dollar store. For example, our grab bag contains hand lotion, car wax (for the guys), gum, candy, tiny animal statues, tissues in cute packaging, cool pencils and pens.

  • Have a smile contest. Everyone smiles as big as he can. Use a ruler to measure.

  • Put pennies in a jar. At a slow point, the child can count and wrap them. Go for an ice cream treat!

  • Wash the family car. Get ready for water, sponge and rag fights.

  • One of our family favorites--Have a sock fight. Match the socks. Roll them into a ball. Divide them among the fightees and let 'em go...great for energetic boys on a rainy day.

  • Host a scavenger hunt for the neighborhood or co-op.

  • Draw profiles freehand. Have your child turn sideways and try to follow the outline of his face. Then switch off.

  • Play bingo...with the prizes mentioned above.

  • Fourth of July activities and projects are educational, patriotic and entertaining.

Revel in the relaxing month of July. Kick back, enjoy the freedom of summer with these homeschool activities.
