Homeschool Co-op:A True Story

Participation in homeschool activities through a group, such as a homeschool co-op is important for every child. But it is especially crucial if the family wishes to home educate through high school. If the child/teen
is unhappy, the pressure is very heavy to put him in school. The following is a true, cautionary tale.
It was six years ago. A very large, homeschooling family lived out in the country. Just the transportation to and from social events was a logistical nightmare
and just did not seem worth the effort. The children had each other, a variety of animals and several hobbies.
Everything
seemed fine until the oldest, a boy who was in eighth grade, suddenly announced that he was going to go to high school.
It turns out that he felt so lonely, so isolated, so left out that he couldn't stand another year being home "alone." The
Mom and Dad, who are very loving and kind, realized too late how miserable their teen was. Immediately, they tried to rectify the situation. But there was no way he would listen
to plans to change or become acquainted with other homeschool children at that late date. Finally, the parents decided to enroll him in the public high school. This might have been avoided if, all along, the youngster had been able to attend get-togethers and make friends. Much to their credit, they made sure that all of their other youngsters became active in the homeschool co-op.

If you need it, please ask for help. It is especially critical to get acquainted with families who have children the ages
of yours. I will make the following sweeping statement: Any homeschool Mom will be happy to work out a solution with you. Most Moms are empathetic, kind, understanding--and besides,
their children will benefit, too.
On the other hand, please offer to help. Assist and encourage any harried Mom--car pool, exchange play dates or
babysitting. Maybe she could watch your little one if you take her older one to co-op.
Be open to possibilities and opportunities! Participate in your homeschool co-op. Pay it forward!
