Thanksgiving Homeschool Craft:

Happy Turkeys Win Hands Down

homeschool craft--Thanksgiving turkey

This Thanksgiving homeschool craft can be used in several ways during the holidays.

Begin with the basic turkey. The following supplies are all you need:

  • --white or brown construction paper, various other bright colors
  • --crayons, colored pencils or markers
  • --pencil
  • --glue
  • --scissors
********************

It's easier for the younger child to use the white paper.

Have him lay his hand on the paper and trace it (or he can trace it if he's old enough).

Color the "body" (palm and thumb) of the turkey brown.

Color the four "feathers" (fingers).

Draw the eyes, beak, wattle, etc. on the "head" (thumb).

Draw in legs and feet.

********************

The older youngster can substitute brown paper and make these changes.

Trace, then cut out the "turkey."

Cut out numerous colorful "feathers."

Arrange and glue them on the fingers.

Cut our eyes, beak, wattle, etc. and attach.

Draw the legs and feet.

Also the child can trace Dad's, Mom's, big sister's hands--and so on--to make a turkey family.

Happy Thanksgiving Tree

To really celebrate the spirit of Thanksgiving, try this Thanksgiving homeschool craft idea.

Make several turkeys (to begin with!).

Now, ask the youngster to think of all the things for which he is grateful. Encourage him to take his time and be specific. (It's even better if you work along with him, making "Thankful Turkeys," too.)

Then he writes one thing on each turkey. Make as many as he wants. Post them on windows, walls, doors, etc. (We hang ours on an ornamental tree in our living room.)

Also if you host Thanksgiving dinner, you can invite your guests to add their reasons to be thankful.

Have turkeys pre-made. Attach ribbon through the longest feather. Then folks can easily write their ideas and hang it up or tape it wherever you designate.

********************

To occupy little ones during the day of celebration, buy white craft paper or a length of any inexpensive paper. Tape it somewhere that is convenient for the youngsters. The kitchen table (or a part of it) or a card table set up out of the way work well.

Place lots of crayons/washable markers in the center. This makes a great canvas for creative artwork! (Show them how to make turkeys!)

These little Thanksgiving homeschool crafts are fast, clean and lots of fun...the perfect activities for a bustling holiday season.
