Salutation of a Letter

Use these free homeschooling worksheets for English skills practice. They may also serve as tests. Review the "Five Parts of a Friendly Letter" and the "Letter Sample."

The salutation is the greeting of the letter. In it, you say "hello" to your friend or whomever you are writing. Please read and understand the next points:

1.)The salutation usually begins with "Dear," but not always.

2.) The first word is always capitalized and, of course, anyone's name or any word used instead of his name. (Please see below.)

3.) In a friendly letter, the salutation is followed by a comma.

4.) It is placed next to the right-hand margin, below the heading and above the body.

Study these examples:

  • Dear Mom,

  • My dear Pastor Richards,

  • My dearest Friend,

  • Hi Therese,

  • Dear Father O'Shea

  • Dear Uncle Tom,

*******************
