Homeschool Co-op Games: Little Ones' Own Field Day!

A field day filled with exciting, "old-fashioned," homeschool co-op games is a perfect get-together for the beginning or end of the school year.
Younger siblings and pre-schoolers need their own entertainment while the older children compete in their more raucous high-energy competitions. Set up a small area for the tots to enjoy themselves with gentler, but thoroughly enjoyable activities.
This may be their first experience with group games, so have several Moms on hand to show the little ones where to go, what to do and make sure each visits all the stations. Prizes are fun, but at this age consider giving them to all the children, not just the winners. Have plenty of water available as well as a first aid kit.
In addition to these
games
consider the following ideas. They are deliberately simple, inexpensive and time-tested.
- Pick a Duck--
1. Get ten of those duck bath toys. (You probably have some on your bathroom shelf.) Size doesn't make any difference.
2. Find a large tub in which they will fit.
3. With a waterproof marker, number them on the bottom from one through ten.
4. Obtain lots of tiny prizes. Separate them into paper sacks numbered one through ten.
That day
5. On a table or raised surface, float the ducks in the tub and have the ten sacks set up in a convenient, close-by spot.
6. Ask the children to line up.
7. Blindfold the first, turn him around several times and lead him to the tub.
8. He selects a duck.
9. He then gets a prize from a sack with the corresponding number.
- Racetrack--
1. On a hard surface (eg. playground or basketball court), draw a long, twisting line using sidewalk chalk.
2. Each child runs the course as quickly as he can.
You can (a) leave it at this, (b) have a prize at the end of the track, or (c) use a stopwatch to time players, just for fun. Everyone gets a prize.
- Bubble blowing, perennial favorite among homeschool co-op games for the youngest set...
- Puff Relay--
1. Play this on grassy area. Mark off start and finish lines.
Divide
youngsters into two groups and line them up.
2. The first two contestants get a large ladle (a small, light-weight pot or bowl for the tiniest players) and three cotton balls.
3. They run to the turn around line and race back.
4. They hand off the ladle (pot) and cotton balls to the next persons and the play continues.
5. The team which finishes first wins. Prizes for all!
Homeschool co-op games provide excitement and challenge. Children of all ages will participate with joy and giggles.
