November's Top Three Random Tips for Busy Homeschooling Moms:

1) Simple Meal Planning: Slow Cooker Recipe: Fast and Nutritious Roast

--inexpensive cut of beef
--carrots
--peeled potatoes
--onions
--pepper to taste
--enough liquid to cover (broth, gravy or wine)
Cook on low 7-10 hours

Note: Beets and sweet potatoes are in season.

2) Festive (but fast and easy) Yard Decorating: Every homeschooling family needs at least one bird feeder. Children delight in the glorious variety of birds, their colors and their antics.

These tiny creatures remind us to appreciate all of God's creations...to say nothing of the science aspect.

If you own feeders, now is the time to clean and disinfect them. Scrape off any residue and wash with hot water and white vinegar (one capful per bucket). Dry and refill with seeds.

For November, tie orange and/or red ribbons on the tops of the feeders. This is not only very pretty, but aids the birds in noticing them.

3) Quick Cleaning: Getting ready for the holidays? To clean a chandelier--Put a towel or drop cloth under the fixture. Mix 4 tbsp. ammonia into 2/3 of a glass of white vinegar. Totally immerse each crystal piece in the liquid. Let drip dry. (suggestions from Haley's Cleaning Hints)

Time Out Corner: We Moms need a short time out each day. Here are weekly movie suggestions for you and your husband to snuggle up, relax and enjoy.

  • The Scarlet Pimpernel--the one with Jane Seymour

  • Cinderella Man--I closed my eyes during the boxing, but the rest is terrific.

  • Guarding Tess--Nicholas Cage, whom I really like, and Shirley McLaine, whom I don't like--but both are wonderful in this small little movie

  • Master and Commander-- Beautiful--and accurate!
Available at movie rental stores and some libraries.

Do not rent A Thomas Crown Affair. My husband and I just watched the original with Steve McQueen. We saw the latest version and thought the old one would be much better. Wrong! Both are awful. The original was boring, tried too hard to be "cool," and the characters were awful people.

Enrichment Activity: Grateful Turkeys

To encourage gratitude in all of us--Before Thanksgiving dinner, try this activity.

  • Gather materials in a convenient spot but out of the way of dinner preparations.

    --crayons or markers

    --brown constructions paper

    --pencils

    --scissors

--tape or paper punch and string

    Have people:

  • Trace their hands. (Adults may prefer to trace a willing child's hand or you can pre-cut some "turkeys"--in case someone balks.)

  • Write one thing for which he is grateful. It's not necessary to sign it.

  • Color the turkey.

  • Tape all the turkeys to a "Wall of Thanksgiving". A tree, inside or out, can also be used to hang the "Grateful Turkeys."
