October's Top Three Random Tips for Busy Homeschooling Moms:

1) Simple Meal Planning: Compile two lists of about 14 side and 14 vegetable dishes that your family likes. On the lists, include where to find the recipe (e.g.One Dish Meals, p.70) and the ingredients you don't always have (don't include salt, butter, etc.).

Post these ideas on the refrigerator and stock all the necessary ingredients. Now for dinner, all you have to concentrate on is a meat choice, maybe add a salad or rolls and viola!, a nutritious, simple meal!

*****

2) Festive (but fast and easy) Yard Decorating: Grab your husband's wheelbarrow. Place it strategically and fill it with pumpkins, gourds, flower pots, and maybe a mum or two.

*****

3) Quick Cleaning: To remove marker from painted walls, rub gently with toothpaste and a dry cloth. For enameled walls, use hairspray and wipe before dissolved color runs down. (suggestions from Haley's Cleaning Hints)

Time Out Corner: We Moms need a short time out each day. Here is a relaxing movie recommendation.

Title: An Affair to Remember

  • Setting: New York, Boston and Europe, 1950's

  • Main Characters: Played by Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr

  • Plot: The two main characters meet on a cruise ship while engaged to others. They fall in love and the plot involves working out a solution to this thorny problem.

  • Theme: Virtue must be adhered to despite the cost to oneself.

  • Why I like An Affair to Remember: Do I need to mention that Cary Grant is the epitome of a gentleman and Deborah Kerr exudes ladylike grace and dignity? The sets, of course, are terribly out-of-date. Characters smoke. But who cares? In fact, for me, it added charm and nostalgia.

When a movie has admirable and decently acted characters, an interesting, believable plot, and a universal, wholesome theme, I'm sold.

  • Homeschool Note: The characters could have placed themselves in a compromising position. They didn't. It is uplifting and energizing to watch them behave with character, nobility and selflessness. Great models for all of us!

  • Available: Libraries and movie rental stores

Enrichment Activity: Chore Board

To encourage and cheer our little helpers

  • Cover a bulletin board with white paper or paper geared to the season. (e.g. orange for October)

  • Cut out a large symbol or buy a ready made cut-out. Cut out many coordinated smaller pictures.

  • Tack the large one on the board.

  • For each chore completed, the child writes his name and the task on a smaller cut-out.

  • Pin this to the board. By the end of the month, the youngster(s) will have created a gay, holiday picture.

Seasonal suggestions: October--large fence with small gourds and pumpkins to surround and top it. November--large turkey with colorful feathers and leaves. Christmas tree with lights and ornaments, snowman and snowflakes, etc.
