Three Practical Tips for Busy Homeschool Moms:

1) Homeschooling:

Personal Notebook--Treasure-Trove of Topics
Does your child have trouble finding subjects for his writing assignments? Buy him a spiral notebook. Let him decorate the outside. This is his special place to keep his ideas, drawings, thoughts, poems...anything and everything that catches his fancy.

He can take it with him on any outings...keep it by his beside.

If your student can't think of anything to write, he just needs to get comfortable with the idea. Set aside ten-fifteen minutes everyday before diving into the school day. This is his writing period. Just sit there. Quiet is fine. Thinking is great. Don't break into the time. Eventually he will think of something to write.

Keep in mind--Writing gets easier with practice. Let him know it's OK if he has some trouble getting started. Just keep at it.

2) Nature Appreciation:

Time for seed catalogues! Select your purchases but don't throw them away.

Use the following ideas for starters. I'll bet you can think of many more ideas. (Would you share them with the rest of us?)
--to practice cutting straight lines (pre-schoolers)
--to help a child draw flowers, bushes, etc.
--to help identify plants

3) Household:

"If your house is really a mess and a stranger comes to the door, greet her with, 'Who could have done this? We have no enemies.'" Phyllis Diller

A quick and effective apron to protect clothes from the children's paint project or your extra heavy-duty house cleaning is a trash bag. Just cut head and arm holes and you're ready for any mess. Haley's Cleaning Hints by Graham and Rosemary Haley.

Literature and Movies:

To be our best for our families, we Moms need a short time out each day. Grab a book or pop in a DVD and relax with your husband,. (Although most of the recommended books/films are generally appropriate, they are suggested with us parents in mind. So please preview them.)

Book Recommendation:

  • Mansfield Park--Jane Austen

Movie Recommendations: It is time for the annual viewing of these classics.

  • The Ultimate Gift--James Garner (new DVD release)
  • The Passion--Mel Gibson, Director
  • Jesus of Nazareth

Enrichment Idea: Easter Notices

To encourage a deeper appreciation and understanding of the greatest miracle of all.

  • Need 5 or so sheets of heavy white paper. (construction, cardstock, etc.)
  • Write a phrase on each with bold, colorful markers.
    "He Is Risen!"
    "Jesus Is Alive! "
    Bible quotes
  • Decorate...empty tomb, cross with beautiful flowers, etc.
  • Post these around the house and on windows/doors.
