Make a Timeline

The homeschool timeline is a teaching essential. This educational tool organizes important historic events in chronological order. History comes alive and the child "sees the big picture."

We found that constructing a timeline doesn't have to be intimating...or expensive! It can be a fun family project. Just follow the easy steps outlined in the article.

An interesting alternative--The student makes flashcards of the dates and events rather than a timeline. Use them ina variety of ways.

--Your child can memorize the most important dates. Have a contest. Who can most quickly name the event that matches the date?
--He can arrange the cards in chronological order. Make a game of it. Time him. See if he can beat that time.

I'm sure you can think of additional ideas. Please share them with us.

Timeline Dates

  • Children, put the dates below on the timeline.

  • Moms, use the information in whatever way fits best for your family: Put all of them on the timeline at one time...do one a day...use as a Friday afternoon project...etc.

  • FYI--Unless otherwise noted, for the date of a person I just added birth and death dates and divided by two.

  • Early dates are approximate. There is some argument about various dates, but I've just used the common ones. By all means, please put whatever date you think accurate.

  • Make listings as short as possible. Use abbreviations and symbols. Just don't make my mistake--be so brief that the meaning is unintelligible!
