Labor Day Fun

"Labor conquers everything." Virgil

School just began and already Labor Day is upon us! But take advantage of this opportunity. It's the ideal time to discuss an important topic which sometimes is never really addressed, the value and honor of work.

This holiday also provides a chance to "sneak in" a discussion of those virtues which are indispensable to the homeschooling student...and at the beginning of the new year, too!

(Be sure to keep a record of the projects. Depending on the what you do, they can count as English, art, speech, or reading.)

  • Make a book. What careers/jobs interest the child? This includes everything that appeals to him, not necessarily what he wants to be.

Draw a picture-or paste one found in a magazine-of these on separate sheets of cardstock or white paper.

    Cut them out.

Glue or tape on different colors of construction paper.

    Design a cover.

Punch 3 holes and tie together with ribbon or yarn.

Older children can add catchy headlines and/or descriptions.

  • Schedule a tour of a factory, hospital or other workplace with your co-op.

  • Research and write a short paper about an interesting career. You could designate a number of different sources to be used or a teen could even interview a professional in his field of interest.

  • Encourage the youngster to think and express his thoughts. Discuss the one of the following:

What Dad does at work. What talents does he use? What skills has he learned? What virtues has he developed? How does his work help the family--materially and otherwise?

Being a homeschool Mom. Now is the proper time to have a discourse on sacrifice in general, and yours, in particular.

Workers' contributions to the comforts we take for granted? Breakfast (eg. farmers, ranchers, packing workers, truck drivers, store owners, clerks) Newspaper...Books...Heating/Air Conditioning...Clothes...the list goes on and on

Jobs mentioned in the Bible. The whole family might need to join this effort!

  • Take lunch to Dad.

Have fun with this. With just a bit of planning, Labor Day activities can be woven seamlessly into regular assignments. They add interest and pizzazz!
