Moms' Meetings

The home school co-op is essential in getting Moms together. Support group Moms' meetings and Moms' dinners out are two proven opportunities for support and friendship.

Initial Decisions

Who? All members and anyone interested in homeschooling should plan to attend. Remind everyone to their planners or calendars and any information/tips they want to share.

When? They can be planned monthly or bi-monthly depending on the co-op. A weekday evening around 6:30 or 7:00 usually proves best for most homeschooling families.

Where? Gatherings may be held at church or other public place or a member's home. The latter is fun and relaxing and comfortable and encourages a more social atmosphere. (Is it too obvious which I prefer?) .

What? A regular pattern for the gathering makes assembling an agenda simple.

Following is a sample outline:

• Gather and begin with prayer.

• Co-op business and planning-- Announcements and discussions about activities, financial issues, questions, suggestions consume the bulk of time.

  These will include--financial and organizational issues
  announcements about upcoming activities
  discussion about upcoming activities
  suggestions
  questions
  particulars about the next meetings (when and where)
  pertinent news--homeschooling or otherwise

  Party planning is an important topic. Volunteers need to volunteer! publicity...decorations...refreshments... games ...

• Education/enrichment program--(If this is included, be sure to allow enough time.)

  There are an infinite variety of topics and ways to accomplish this. Guest speaker...tape...DVD...handouts...

• Refreshments--Simple but mandated! I have always believed that whoever has graciously opened her home to the others should not provide any food. For most (well, me anyway), it is a challenge just to get my house clean, and other Moms are more than happy to contribute.

  If a member has a problem, she should feel free to bring it up either in the question or refreshment portion of the get-together. It depends on whether she desires the whole group to help out or would rather approach others on an individual basis.

Home school co-op Moms' meetings are the backbone of the co-op. They also offer opportunities for support and friendship. Indispensable!
