Ponder the Pros

of Homeschooling

homeschooling

Periodically, the pros of homeschooling bear review. First, this reminds us of why we home educate. Second, this reinforces our convictions. Finally, thinking about the reasons renews our strength and enables us to aid other parents.

Time for a review: (where to begin???)

  • Values of the family can be taught.

  • The child will learn; he can advance at his own pace with attention to special circumstances (has a learning disability or is gifted).

  • Study is not interrupted by arbitrary time periods so he can continue with activity if needed or desired. We work so hard to encourage study, why disrupt an interested student?

  • Positive social pressure can be encouraged.

  • Child is protected from negative forces until he is sturdy and mature enough to deal with them. He has time to blossom.

  • Child can be himself without fear of not "fitting in." He has an opportunity to know himself and appreciate his God-given gifts.

  • The best books and materials can be used.

  • Parent and child can truly enjoy each other's company throughout the day.

  • The child is not forced to study watered-down or outright erroneous information.

  • He is not forced to listen to information that should only be taught by the parents, example--sex/drug education(?).

  • Character can be formed throughout the school day.

  • Good study habits can be ingrained. Concentration...focus...discipline...

  • Parent and child (and siblings) develop a strong bond by learning together, example--reading and discussing literature and doing science experiments.

  • Child can learn in various, creative ways through many avenues.

  • Family can use learning methods most suitable to the child.

  • Creativity can be encouraged, examples--go outside for class, on a field trip.

  • Family life is nourished, strengthened and enjoyed.

  • Youngster has the opportunity to explore and pursue special talents or interests.

  • Time is well-spent on education.

  • A quieter, more relaxed atmosphere nurtures his spirit.

  • The child will be physically safer from drugs, guns, etc.

The pros of homeschooling continue on and on. It is well to keep these in mind and share them with others as the opportunity arises.
