Homeschool Mom: Pioneer Triumphs
*Important: Be sure to read the note below.
This true story of a homeschool Mom took place in 1985...
The Mom sat at the dining room table with her five youngsters.
They
had been homeschooling for about a year, and everyone had settled into
a comfortable routine.
It was about an hour until the lunch break when someone
knocked smartly at the door. The Mom hurried to answer it. A gentleman with
a notebook and badge stood there. She opened the door, and he explained that he
was an official investigating a report that her children were not
attending school.
Well, being the gracious woman she is, she invited him in.
Hastily, she pulled up another chair to the table and brought him an ice
tea. Then she proceeded to open her planner, the lesson plans and grade
book. She hauled out the texts and workbooks. Then carefully and patiently, she explained what each of the five students was
learning. As she began to pull out the quarter tests to show him, he suddenly
stood up, snapped shut his folder and stated grimly, "I only wish the
schools were doing what you are doing." Then with a nod, he showed himself out and was
never heard from again.
What a great story! I am so grateful to this homeschool Mom...and to all the other pioneers of the modern home education movement.
Without the Internet,
without a co-op or support group, without the myriad of products and services, but armed with strength, determination, courage and charity,
these heroines took the lumps and fought the battles
that paved the way for all of us. It is an honor and a privilege to know these women.

*Please keep in mind that this was 1985. There was no protocol for dealing with
these situations. Most people had never heard of homeschooling,
much less actually put it into practice. If you have questions, please contact your
state
home
education association.
