Fun Fact: In the Roman calendar (which began the year with March), August was Sextilis, Latin for sixth. But when Augustus Caesar came to power, the senate changed this month to August.

Try water games to counter the August heat.

"Cool" Homeschooling Ideas: (sorry! I couldn't resist.)

  • Fill a plastic liquid soap bottle with water. A concrete patio/sidewalk/driveway is a terrific canvas for art. Try writing names, the alphabet, numbers...

  • The bottle also subs as a water pistol.

  • Water balloon--catch & toss, make 2 points into a bucket, play dodge ball

  • Bubble blowing...detergent & water (make various sizes of wire hoops) or commercial set (Jump in the pool or hose off if the child gets soapy.)

  • Make lemonade. Use commercial packets or mix water, lemon juice and sugar to taste. If the child is older he could set up a "Lemonade Stand." Just cover a card table with a plastic tablecloth. Use poster board and heavy markers for a big sign. Have plastic cups, lemonade with ice, and a money box. Have about five dollars in coin to make change. Many people will stop to buy, even just from admiration of your child's "get up and go." (Of course, stay in the background but close by.)

  • Fill a children's pool.

--Make folded paper or leaf boat. Set up races. Blow the ships to the finish line.

    --Serve a pool-side or in-pool lunch.

--Now is the time for face painting/finger painting! Clean-up is a snap.

Younger child: Gather a variety of non-breakable measuring items. Dump them in the water to set up the the ideal laboratory for learning about the properties of water--volume, temperature, etc. What happens if the container has a hole? Talk and listen about what is occurring. Put a ball in the pool. Does it sink? what does sink? Experiment with a sponge.

Be sure to take pictures! August is the time for traditional summer activities. Not only are these projects entertaining, but they are memories in the making.

Your child will enjoy the September Activities!
