A Homeschooling Mom Finds Balance
A homeschooling Mom can and must find balance in her own life. Balance provides protection from discouragement and burnout in home education.
Consider--When a Mom is nuturing young children, teaching older ones, and managing a home, it may be difficult to consider her own needs in her own life. But making the effort to create balance is essential in order to maintain a healthy, cheerful attitude and longevity in home education.
The key to homeschool inspiration is to focus on priorities. No one can do everything perfectly. It is vital to take care of first things first. Let's say the major concerns are
God
Immediate Family
Homeschooling
Dive into these wholeheartedly. When there is a conflict of activities, make sure the Top Three win out. For example, some people are amazed that a homeschooling Mom by-passes a super sale at the local department store or a snazzy lunch with friends. But this kind of committment to the most important priorities is absolutely vital.
Out of commtitment and self-sacrifice comes a sense of pride and comfort to the homeschooling Mom.
We understand that these priorities--for example, God, family and homeschooling--are of the most lasting and utmost importance. Sincere devotion to duties is also a tremendous source of satisfaction. For what is more valuable than educating the heart and mind of a child?
So even if other things (the house, bargain shopping, lunch dates) are postponed, a homeschooling Mom can rest assured that her tireless contributions to God, her family and her child/teen's education are more than worth it.
Nevertheless, some attention must be paid to the rest of the whole person. That is, a busy Mom should consider the physical, mental, spiritual and emotional aspects of her life. These are neglected only with great risk. Even if it's a miniscule amount, some time must be included for other needs of us Moms.
To create a healthy balance, try these suggestions:
- Physical: Meet the requirements for eating well (gourmet meals not necessary) and exercising (say, a few strectches and regular walking)
Little time=great rewards
- Physical: Maintain grooming (hair, clothes and nails neat)
- Mental: Read an interesting, relaxing book (even one page a day is just fine)
- Mental: Try crosswords and puzzles (Maybe your husband will join the fun--all the better!)
- Spiritual: Participate in weekly services at church
- Spiritual: Daily devotionals
- Emotional: Plan regular time with your husband
- Emotional: Attend
Mom's meetings
at least monthly
- Emotional: Send a quick note or card weekly to a friend or relative
