Happy Mother's Day!

These homeschool art projects are proven winners. They are educational, fun and make wonderful gifts.

Important! Read all the directions of the project before beginning.

Protect work surface with newspapers and have the children wear old clothes or aprons.

Please adapt these homeschool activities to the age of the artist. For example, in the first project, an older child might use pastel chalks and cardstock; a younger sibling, writing paper and crayons.

What is a Mom (Friend, etc.)? Booklet

  • white sheets of paper, all the same size (notebook paper, computer paper, cardstock, etc)
  • crayons, paints, chalk, etc.
  • stapler, hole punch
  • decorative ribbon, stamps, stickers, etc.

On the cover page, print/write:

"What Is a Mother (Grandmother, Friend, etc.)?"

Then on the opening page write/print:

"A Mother..."

On consecutive sheets, draw and/or print/write the answers. eg. "tucks me in bed.", "is someone I can always talk to.", "helps me with reading.", "takes me to the park.", "tells me she loves me.", etc.

Decorate to the heart's content.

Bind with a stapler or hole punch and ribbons.

Fancy Flowerpot

  • clay flowerpot
  • pencil
  • acrylic paints, paintbrush

Wash flowerpot (even if new), rinse and dry thoroughly.

With the pencil, sketch a picture, pattern and decorations on the surface of the pot. (You, the family, flowers, abstract design, etc.)

Paint design with acrylics. Let dry.

If desired, you can fill it with pencils and pens or plant a plant.

Hanging Picture

  • a photo of you (or any favorite photo)
  • clear Con-Tact paper
  • cardstock
  • scissors
  • glue
  • empty crayon box (8 Large Crayon size)
  • glitter
  • 12" of colorful yarn

Neatly trim the photo an oval shape that fits nicely on the front (side where the lid folds down) of the box.

Cover the picture with Con-Tact paper.

For background, cut cardstock that is slightly larger than the picture.

Glue picture to the center of the cardstock piece.

Glue that to the front of the crayon box.

Squeeze a trail of glue along the edge of the cardstock around the photo.

Sprinkle glitter on the glue and let dry. Shake off excess.

Open the crayon box and glue the center of the length yarn to the inside flap.

Glue the box shut and tie ends of the yarn into a bow to hang.
