Homeschool Co-op Games:

Field Day Fun

homeschool support group activities

A field day filled with homeschool co-op games, refreshments and all around good cheer is a terrific activity with which to begin or end the school year.

Field Day provides an opportunity for youngsters (and Moms) to get to know new members and reacquaint themselves with old ones. In addition, it is simple to prepare!

  • Secure a facility with a grassy area, shade and restrooms.

  • Ask each Mom to send fruit, cookies, small sacks of snacks, juice or teeny prizes. This is a co-op activity. Get all involved.

  • Make sure that there is plenty of help on the actual day.

  • Have water and a first aid kit readily available.

Two decisions which need to be made early:

  • 1.) Do you want your field day to consist of actual homeschool co-op games (the ages are very approximate)?

    2-4 years
    more 2-4 years
    4-6 years
    more 4-6 years
    6-8 years
    more 6-8 years
    8-10 years and older

... or goofy games such as Greased Pig? (There could be a mixture of both kinds.)

Just one caution--Don't organize too many activities. Keep it simple. You are a homeschooling Mom, not a professional games organizer. This is a day for the youth to relax, enjoy each contest and not feel pressured to move to the next station.

  • 2.) Will you have prizes? Tiny awards at each station are a thrill. As to "prizes," here are some possibilities:

--1 piece of single wrapped candy
--1 sticker (buy sheets and cut them into individual pieces)
    --single stick of gum
--1 pencil or pen (buy them in a large box or pack at a wholesale club or other cheap store and break it up)
    --a juice box
--1 homemade goodie (cookie, candy, brownie, etc.)
--1 snack bag (chips, pretzels, popcorn, etc.)

Have lunch sacks (which each child has labeled with his name) in which to keep the prizes.

  • Plan for easy refreshments at the conclusion of Field Day. Juice and a cupcake, for instance, are just fine.

Ideally, all the children should participate.

  • 1.) Please check out the fun possibilities I
and still more possibilities II for the very youngest siblings.

  • 2.) Don't forget the teens! Some older players will relish the outdoor contests (listed above) as much as the younger ones.

On the other hand, most teen boys enjoy team sports, such as football, soccer and baseball. Depending on your co-op, the girls may join the guys in volleyball or softball. Other suggestions for the young ladies include board games or their own physical team competitions.

With a minimal amount of preparation, a field day filled with homeschool co-op games and/or silly activities will be a popular addition to the group calendar.
