Homeschool Freebies:

February

Mt. Rushmore

Welcome to homeschool freebies: February activities. Your children will enjoy this month's projects. Try them during a school break, a dark, wintry evening or a quiet week-end.

It is pleasant to think, just under the snow,
That stretches so bleak and blank and cold,
Are beauty and warmth that we cannot know,
Green fields and leaves and blossoms of gold.

Homeschool ideas for Nature/Science Projects for February:

  • Flower Arrangement

Despite the snowy cold weather, you can get a head start on spring. As soon as the forsythia, flowering quince, magnolia, etc. buds begin to swell, cut and bring the branches inside. Place them in a deep vase with plenty of water. Keep them in a warm spot. After about ten days, lovely blossoms will emerge.

  • Bird Feeders--Keep them filled.

  • Gardening Preparations: Clean, sharpen and oil garden tools. Wash flowerpots. While we are still cooped up, take advantage of this time--enlist your children's help.

  • Homeschool Freebies Art Project: A Wintry Scene (Please read all of the instructions before beginning.)

    --2 sponges
    --4" pine tree clippings
    --green and white tempera paints
--blue and white construction paper sheets
--scraps of white and other colors of construction paper
    --glue
    --scissors
    --markers

    1. Saturate 1 sponge with green paint. Saturate the 2nd sponge with white paint.

    2. Place the blue construction paper vertically.

    3. Press a pine tree clipping into the green paint sponge.

    4. Firmly press this clipping (several inches from the bottom of the paper) onto the blue construction paper. Place it upright as a tree.

    5. Repeat the above steps 2-3 times in order to form a pine tree.

    6. Let dry.

    7. Now press another pine clipping in the white paint and gently lay it atop the green tree in various places to make a light covering of snow.

    9. To construct a snowman, tear 2-3 circles of white construction paper. Glue the snowman next to the tree. Make his scarf and hat from the various colors of other scraps.

    10. Use the black marker to make his eyes, nose, mouth and buttons down his front.Use orange to make a carrot nose and brown marker to draw stick arms and color the trunk of the tree.

11.Finish the snow scene by putting dots of glue atop the picture. Sprinkle with the glitter, then shake off excess. It's snowing!
