Homeschool Graduation

Celebrate!

highschool graduation

High school* homeschool graduation is certainly a time to celebrate! Congratulations to you and your student!

"The only limit to our realization of tomorrow is our doubts of today. Let us move forward with strong and active faith."
Franklin D. Roosevelt (in a speech written but not given, died April 13, 1945)

Every family will celebrate graduation in a way meaningful for them. It might be with a home school support group, church group and/or with the family only. In any case, below are helps and suggestions for you to consider:

  • Formal Pictures--Yes, I had to practically hog-tie our three boys to do this. But the rewards are timeless. (Funny, our two girls were much more amenable to the picture idea!) Taking a portrait commemorates such an auspicious occasion, enhances the "specialness" of the accomplishment and provides beautiful wall decoration.

Tip: One homeschooling family we know hangs their children's high school pictures directly above their baby pictures. We copied their idea and receive many comments by visitors on the arrangement...and constantly seeing them is very comforting and satisfying.

Please make picture appointment early. It takes time to take, select, process and get the photos in hand. January or February is not too soon. March is not too late.

Tips: To keep costs down, ask about buying ala carte. We only want 1 8x10, 1 5x7 and as many wallets as possible, usually 30-40. Ask about specials. This year we got 15 wallets free because I ordered from and returned the proofs within five days.

  • Homeschool Graduation Announcements--Make or buy them.

Let me describe our announcement. If it's helpful, then just adapt it for your child. Ours are done on the computer, very simple and tailored.

Use colored and white card stock. Print on either the colored or white, then use the other as the background.

Buy envelopes (5 3/4" x 8 3/4") at the discount or office supply store. Make the card background fit the envelope.

Before you print, play with the font, wording, spacing, etc. until you and the graduate are happy. Our wording is:

On June fifth, Two Thousand Twelve
    John Jay Jones
    will graduate from high school
    through Seton Home Study.

You are cordially invited to a
    special celebration at
Our Lady of Good Counsel Church.
    Mass will be offered at
    two o'clock p.m.,
    followed by a reception.

John will continue his studies at the Constantin College of Liberal Arts at the University of Dallas.

"...it is clear that there can be no true education which is not wholly directed to man's last end..."
Pope Pius XI, Christian Education of Youth

You can pick any quote which embodies your faith, philosophy of education (why you homeschool) or which inspires others.

Mail the announcements to family and friends. Be sure to include one of those above mentioned pictures!

  • Special Dinner--After the reception at church, we try to have a celebration at home just for our family and friends.

Our little homeschool graduation party is informal and colorful. Balloons, streamers, graduation themed paper plates, napkins, tablecloths, plastic forks and knives.

Our food menu is prepared ahead and ready to go quickly.

    Lasagna
    Bread
    Salad
Ice cream sundaes with all the fixin's
    Big cake with graduation congratulations

In the backyard, we have ready- to-go such yard games as ring toss and kick ball for the younger children and badminton and croquet for the teens. Also on hand--lots of chairs.

  • Camera!
  • *These tips are directed to high school graduates. Eighth grade celebrations could just consist of a festive dinner.

Enjoy your homeschool graduation. Revel in your accomplishments and look forward to a wonderful future.
