old fashioned activities by the fireplace

Cold winter evenings evoke pictures of our great-grandmother and her family sitting by a crackling fire with ever-busy hands. Continue tradition and appreciation for our own family with "old-fashioned" activities.

  • pull taffy

  • roast chestnuts

  • pop popcorn

  • make smores

  • cut out paper dolls

  • whittle or woodwork

  • even crochet a scarf or start a quilt

  • make sachets

    Orange Pomander

Two versions of this sachet could be made. One involves simply the orange, cloves and ribbon. The second requires a little more effort but is very rewarding. Using the spices hardens the orange and makes it last for years.

--Stud an orange with whole cloves. (Prick the skin with a small nail to make insertion easier.)

--Roll in a mixture of equal parts ground cinnamon, allspice and orris root. This last ingredient is available from the internet( Orris Root (Powder) ), local health food store or compound pharmacy. Be sure to call ahead to make sure it is available and can be purchased in a small quantity.

--Wrap in tissue paper and store in a dark place for about 4 weeks.

--Shake off excess powder and tie a pretty ribbon around the orange.

The pomander will emit a lovely fragrance for months and even years. These make welcome and thoughtful gifts, too.

  • Conclude the family time with a read aloud story, hot cocoa and coffee cake.

Brighten gray days and create warm memories with these homeschool helps.
