Have we provided a quiet spot for him to learn without interruption? He deserves that. It's a challenge with big families.
It can be handled in several ways: He can study in
1) his own room
2) in a room close by but away from commotion
3) in the classroom with everyone else
Generally, throughout the day, we chose the latter. Gates were placed to assure safety for the toddlers and books and toys were out. The little ones
learned to play quietly on the other side of the room while the students' desks were right beside me or within reach.
When it was the toddlers turn for attention--to read together or join the game in which they were involved--the older children worked on the computer or took their reading assignments to another spot for a designated time.
I also did not answer the 'phone unless it was my husband and allowed no other interruptions throughout the day. Children are smart; they pick up
on this serious (but pleasant) atmosphere.
