P.E. in Homeschooling:

Health and Fitness

homeschool health--foods

P.E. in homeschooling can take many forms.

Physical fitness is obviously one choice. So a child can

1) join a sports team

2) enroll in classes such as Irish step dance, karate, ballet and archery

3) have a regular exercise program of walking, running and floor exercises

4) participate in weekly scheduled co-op physical games and activities

5) opt to master basic physical skills

A worthwhile alternative to add to the mix is the study of "health." Design this course according to your student's needs and interests. "How you opt to teach health in your homeschool is your option." Saba and Gattis, The McGraw-Hill Homeschooling Companion.

Finding information is never a problem, but overload may be! Books, magazines and internet information abound. The state extension service and health departments have free pamphlets and many would be delighted to provide a speaker to a homeschool group. Many grocery stores have registered dietitians who host free classes. Hospitals and fire stations sponsor tours.

The following topics are just starting points for a health component of p.e. in homeschooling.

"For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church." Ephesians 5:29

P.E. in homeschooling is a must in many states. But rather than being "just another requirement," physical education especially presents a vista in which your child's needs, talents and interests can point the way. It is an opportunity to explore and enjoy.
